Charter members Donna Duke and Rebecca Councill help celebrate the 30th birthday of the Watauga County Historical Society.
Watauga County was formed in 1849 from parts of Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell and Yancey Counties. The village of Council's Store, later the town of Boone, became the county seat. People from Pennsylvania and New England, largely of Ulster Scots, English, German and Swiss heritage, settled the region.
The Watauga County Historical Society exists to preserve, promote and disseminate the history of Watauga County.
